Henie Onstad Kunstsenter announces Fall publications and releases

Henie Onstad Kunstsenter continues its curatorial production model of publishing books and recordings independently of its exhibitions. This fall, HOK’s in-house record label, Prisma Records, releases a series of new as well as historic commissions of works by experimental and electronic sound artists.

Omer Fast: 5000 Feet is the Best (Sternberg Press)
Edited by Milena Hoegsberg and Melanie O’Brian. Co-produced with The Power Plant, Toronto, Canada. This publication focuses on one work by artist Omer Fast: 5000 Feet is the Best (2011). With this work, Fast has entered into a discussion about one of the most pressing issues today, namely drone surveillance and warfare. The book compiles critical analyses of his film by art historians Liz Kotz and T.J. Demos, a US foreign policy article, as well as the artist’s script materials. An email thread of responses from different fields engages a range of issues pertaining to drone warfare, opening the conversation into a forum on politics, ethics, aesthetics, and human experience.

Saskia Holmkvist: In Translation (Revolver Publishing)
Edited by Tone Hansen. This publication takes an intensive look at the works of Swedish artist Saskia Holmkvist’s work, including In Translation (2012), a two-screen video work, commissioned by HOK. The work explores the complexities and consequences of professional translators representing asylum seekers or politicians. The publication includes a conversation between Saskia Holmkvist, Tone Hansen and Maria Lind and essays by Peter Amdam and Chus Martinez.

PRISMA RECORDS 2012: Kåre Kolberg, Oren Ambarchi & Popofoni
All releases produced by Lars Mørch Finborud and Lasse Marhaug.

Kåre Kolberg – Electronic Works 1970–1973
This LP presents three works by the Norwegian sound art pioneer Kåre Kolberg. The two first pieces presented, Omgivelser (1970) and Nova (1973), were recorded in the legendary Studio Experymentalne in Warsaw and accompanied a sound installation and an experimental film by artists Anders Kjær and Jan Horne.

Oren Ambarchi & James Rushford – Wreckage
The commissioned work Wreckage was premiered at the Ultima Contemporary Music Festival at HOK in 2011. Originally performed by Ensemble neoN, this LP presents Ambarchi and Rushford’s studio version of the piece.

Popofoni
This gatefold 2LP is a reissue of the holy grail of Norwegian free jazz and electronic music, Popofoni, recorded at HOK in 1971. It features compositions by Arne Nordheim, Terje Rypdal, Kåre Kolberg, Gunnar Sønstevold and Alfred Janson recorded by an extended Jan Garbarek Quintet. The Popofoni project was originally initiated by HOK to showcase the connections between pop and contemporary music.
