We delve into a complex, multi-layered range of universes existing alongside and within each other-as it’s these “worlds within worlds” that Berg loves to explore. The result: an emblematic series of photographs that chronicle the visual language that gives New York its distinctive spirit.
Carter Berg was born and raised in New York City. The impulse to become a photographer began when he was still in college. During spring break of his senior year, he worked as a production assistant on a Bruce Weber shoot. “I watched Bruce and his gang and I thought, ‘I want to do that.”‘ This momentary inspiration became a full-fledged passion and he spent several years as a freelance photographer’s assistant, eventually becoming first assistant to Oberto Gili, with whom he traveled the world before going out on his own. “I learned quickly that the really memorable images are the ones that can happen in between the pictures you’re supposed to be taking.” With that in mind, Berg carries his camera with him everywhere-just as he does his keys, always at the ready to “unlock” those special unexpected moments. Carter Berg’s work has appeared internationally in numerous publications such as Elle Décor, Madame Figaro, The Wall Street Journal, and Departures. He has also shot advertising campaigns for Ralph Lauren, as well as photographed for several lifestyle books. He and his wife, Kasia, live in Manhattan, where they met.
