Royal Collection Publications Appoints New US Distributor
Royal Collection Publications has appointed the University of Chicago Press as their new distributor in the United States and Canada. From 1 January 2010, UCP will be responsible for the fulfilment of all new and backlist trade titles. The Royal Collection produces between ten and twelve new publications a year, including exhibition catalogues, gift books and scholarly catalogues raisonnés.
The Royal Collection launched its own imprint in the 1990s. In 2002 it created an inhouse publishing programme to build a definitive series about the Royal Collection and royal residences – Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle, the Palace of Holyroodhouse and Clarence House – written by or in consultation with its own curators. Now well established as one of the world’s most prestigious art publishers, Royal Collection Publications has an impressive backlist and expanding programme of future titles. The aim of the publishing programme is to increase knowledge and enjoyment of the Royal Collection and the royal residences through books that are well produced, thoughtfully designed and accessibly written for a wide audience. All profits from the sale of Royal Collection books are dedicated to the Royal Collection Trust, a registered charity, and support curatorial, educational and conservation work.
The Royal Collection, held in trust by The Queen for her successors and the Nation, is one of the most famous and significant art collections in the world. Shaped by the personal tastes of kings and queens over more than 500 years, it includes paintings, drawings and watercolours, ceramics, silver and gold-work, sculpture, gems and jewels, books, manuscripts, arms and armour, and furniture. It contains paintings and drawings by almost all the great names of Western art, including Leonardo, Raphael, Holbein, Caravaggio, Rembrandt, Van Dyck, Vermeer and Canaletto.
Recent Royal Collection titles include the award-winning Amazing Rare Things: The Art of Natural History in the Age of Discovery co-authored by Sir David Attenborough, the landmark three-volume catalogue raisonné of Sèvres in the Royal Collection, Bruegel to Rubens: Masters of Flemish Painting, and The Royal Tour: A Souvenir Album. Amongst a number of eagerly anticipated new titles is Victoria & Albert: Art & Love, a major re-assessment of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert as patrons of the arts, published to coincide with the exhibition at The Queen’s Gallery, Buckingham Palace, in March 2010.
